SE's People:
Steve Gehley-
Locator/Groundman
Throwing
the hammer is nothing like throwing a bull. Steve Gehley knows lots about the
former and not so much about the latter. In fact, he's a four-time All American
in hammer throwing, a grueling track and field sport.
Born in Madras, Oregon, Steve has lived most of his 27 years in
Keizer. After graduating from McNary High School, Steve went on to Western
Oregon University, where he graduated with a degree in Business and Computer
Science. While in high school, he played football and basketball, in addition
to track. In college, he concentrated on track, and was a national champion in
hurling the 35-pound weight.
Working at Salem Electric helps Steve stay in shape. "I really
enjoy working outdoors," he says. Being a Locator/Groundman provides him some
exercise. But not so much that he can't work out at least three times a week:
running, lifting weights and throwing the hammer with his wife. With his wife?
Yes, you read it right. Steve and Molly are a hammer-throwing couple who met in
college and got married last July.
Molly, who teaches Introduction to Physical Science at McNary
High, was throwing before it was recognized as a woman's sport at Western
Oregon. She's also an All American in the sport, ranked among the top 10 in the
nation. Although it wasn't recognized for the last Olympics, Molly placed 4th
in national team trials. "Her best throw is 196 feet," Steve says proudly. As
her partner and coach, Steve is helping Molly get ready for the 2000 Olympics.
Being able to throw your weight around like that, Steve could
have chosen any number of professions. But, he's a welcome addition to Salem
Electric's line crews where, if needed, he can hold up the back of a truck
while they fix a flat.

Wind Power and Your Rates
The Foote Creek Rim Wind
Power Project, which we have been reporting on for several months, is planned
to be up and running in late February after several delays.
As previously reported in the "Information Bulletin," Salem
Electric was scheduled to receive power, generated by the 69 turbines located
in Arlington, Wyoming, by December 15, 1998. Due to some testing problems, that
date was pushed back to January 1, 1999, then to January 15.
Remember,
this project, which is in effect making Salem Electric a utility that sells
100% renewable power, will increase your rates 3.5%. The increase will be
prorated based on the date of delivery to Salem.
